This code of conduct has been modified from the Django Code of Conduct under the CC BY 3.0 license.

This code of conduct is enforced on our official social media channels as well as any physical-world spaces where Extra Credits is involved or represented in some official capacity. Any other social sites or spaces are not officially moderated by the Extra Credits staff; it is up to the creators of those communities to decide if they want to enforce this code of conduct, use their own code, or not use a code at all.

If you post in our officially moderated spaces, your content is subject to our moderation policies. When you are using your own website or social media channels, you are more than welcome to post whatever content you wish.

This code of conduct doesn’t change anything about the way that the current Extra Credits community behaves; rather, it exists to give some insight into our moderation process, reinforce our values, and help community members feel comfortable posting in our spaces and welcoming new viewers to these spaces.

We actively moderate our comments sections to promote healthy, productive, and educational discussion among viewers. Above all else, we reserve the right to delete user-submitted content that we deem offensive, spammy, off-topic, or otherwise inappropriate for our audience.

• “There is a difference between discourse for the purpose of understanding, and discourse for the purpose of undermining” (quote attributed to @amandaseales). We’re pretty good at telling the difference between someone who is genuine, polite, and well-meaning in their comments (even if they disagree with the video’s content or with other commenters), versus someone who is trolling, antagonistic, and demeaning towards others.

• Individual comments or comment threads may be deleted at any time if they encourage personal attacks or are not furthering productive discussion.

• Repeat offenders may be blocked entirely from participating in online discussions. Deliberately inflammatory comments from first-time commenters/non-subscribers may earn an immediate ban.

• Off-topic comments include (but are not limited to) self-promoting links, irrelevant chat memes (e.g. "1st comment!"), and so forth.

• Due to occasional technical issues, a small percentage of comments may be blocked/hidden/deleted by mistake.

 

Be friendly and patient.

Be welcoming and respectful. Extra Credits welcomes and supports community members of all backgrounds and identities; after all, our own staff is made up of people from a wide range of backgrounds and identities. (You can probably figure this out by observing the different types of bean people we draw in all our videos!) This includes, but is not limited to members of any race, ethnicity, culture, national origin, color, immigration status, social and economic class, educational level, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, age, size, family status, political belief, religion, and mental and physical ability.

 

Be careful in the words that you choose. Professionalism is a value we uphold and ask others to respect. Be kind to others. Do not insult or put down others. Harassment and other exclusionary behavior aren't acceptable. This includes, but is not limited to:

• Violent threats or language directed against another person.

• Discriminatory jokes and language.

• Personal attacks or insults.

• Posting (or threatening to post) other people's personally identifying information ("doxing").

• Unwelcome sexual attention.

• Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behavior.

 

When we disagree, try to understand why. It is important that we resolve disagreements and differing views constructively. Remember that we’re different. The Extra Credits team itself is made better thanks to people from a wide range of backgrounds, and this is even more true for our community of viewers. Different people have different perspectives on issues. Being unable to understand why someone holds a viewpoint doesn’t mean that they’re wrong. Don’t forget that it is human to err and blaming each other doesn’t get us anywhere. Instead, focus on understanding each other and learning from mistakes.
